All About Joiners And Custom Joinery

Joiners work to create architectural woodwork, doors, windows, stairs etc. Shop and kitchen fitting also fall under the remit of a joiner providing the materials used are wood. In the USA joiners are often create things known as ‘finish carpentry’ or ‘millwork’. Joiners are more commonly known as carpenters however they are two different professions. Carpenters often create rough pieces which may not be viewed where as joiners are more finite in their skills. Joiners aim to create a piece of furniture without the use of metal or glue to hold the piece together. Instead the wood is used to create joints which will hold over decades and hundreds of years. Different types of joint are; mortise and tenon, dowel joint and pocket-hole.

Even more finite still are the cabinet makers. Famous cabinet makers such as Thomas Chippendale produced original furniture which has not only stood the test of time due to their design but also through the quality of work. Throughout the 1700′s the rich and upper class in Britain would pay for neoclassical and regency style furniture to be custom made for them from the Chippendale workshop.

This still happens today, furniture can be made to measure either for practical uses or to be created as an heirloom. Made to measure furniture, or custom joinery is a thriving industry as the skills of a joiner are being lost as generations chose not to take up the profession.

Joiners often specialise in one type of furniture and master their art although most joiners are skilled in making all types of furniture and architectural items.

There are two common types of joinery, European and Japanese. Also the Chinese have been using methods of joinery for seven thousand years which create furniture without glue or nails.

Can give an idea about how to design a particular woodworking product. They also give information about the material that has to be used in making a certain product.

A wide range of free woodworking plans are available on the internet. Indeed you will get valuable information from free woodworking plans that can be used for home renovation purposes. On some websites amateur wood workers share their experience, tips and ideas that make up for great free woodworking plans. Some free woodworking plans that are commonly used are bookcase plans, bed plans, shed plans, workbench plans and entertainment centre plans

Cherry Bookshelf plans: It consists of 13 pieces that are screwed and dadoed together. The shaping and joinery is done with the help of drill press and a table saw. The bookshelf has slats and pyramid top posts. Cherry wood is used as it is lighter. You can use other types of wood such as quatersawn white oak. For building this bookcase you require screws, screw hole plugs, slates and shelves. The dimensions of these items will differ according to your requirements.

Break Down Chair Plans: This high backed chair and has no wedges or pegs. You can easily make 2 chairs out of 4′x8′ sheet of good quality plywood. It is very easy to make these chairs.

Antiqued Table plan: Clear pine is used to make this antiqued beauty. Tools that are required to make this table are trim saw or handsaw, bits and drill, spray bottles, wet rag and belt or orbital sander. Materials that are required to make this table include legs, apron, fastening strips and table top. You also require screw and washer, shellac and carpenter’s glue and 8 hanger bolts. Depending on the size of table you want, you should select the dimensions.

Circular Kitchen Table Plan: Solid black walnut wood is used to make this kitchen table. The tabletop which has a radius of 2 feet is a perfect circle. The circular top is on a pedestal base which is constructed using laminated bridle joints. Warmth of this wood enhances as tung oil and polyurethane are used for protecting the finish. The contemporary design of this antique table is much more attractive than formal dining style. Jointer, jigsaw, hand router and some other tools are required to make this piece.

Mahogany bed plan: This ideal master piece is ideal for any bedroom decor. The bed is made from solid mahogany. The bed with its contemporary style has convenient rail hangers A series of slats are required for supporting the bed. A box spring is not required once you use these slats. Depending on the thickness and length of the mattresses the dimensions of the bed will vary. The dimensions should be such that it should be able to handle queen size mattresses. The bed is designed in such a way that you can disassemble it easily.

Jewelry Box plans: This elegant case has a simple design. If there are some beautiful small wooden boards in your house then you can make this box on your own. It won’t take you long to build this attractive box. This can indeed be a perfect last minute gift for a friend.

    More about Cabinets Craftsmanship:

Judging A Cabinet’s Craftsmanship

When picking a kitchen cabinet that is made of wood, it is important to consider the overall look of your kitchen. Would traditional custom kitchen cabinets blend more perfectly with modern kitchen setups as opposed to something more contemporary?

Whether you only have a design in mind or have selected a style of kitchen cabinets already, it is still imperative that you choose either a ready-made or custom kitchen cabinet that spells craftsmanship. The tricky part is often how to tell the difference between a kitchen cabinet that exudes high quality and not just a mass of nailed and plastered particle board.

Examining a Cabinet’s Quality
First thing you need to check in a wooden stock or custom-made kitchen cabinet is the drawer (if your cabinet has one). Examine the joinery, the texture of the surface, the fit of the drawer to the inner part of the furniture, how far out the drawer extends and how smooth it slides on its tracks. Also, try to determine if the drawers glide on high-quality ball bearings, mid-quality rollers, or cheap plastic sliding mechanisms.

Check the door’s hinges and note how far the door swings and whether the door fits snugly to the rest of the cabinet.

Another question you should ask the cabinet manufacturer or distributor is what type of wood was used for the construction of the cabinet. A wooden cabinet is durable. Among the favorites include birch, mahogany, and alder kitchen cabinets. The stain and finishing details also provide a benchmark for quality cabinets.

Listed below are just a few names in the industry that manufacture high quality wood furniture, including ebony, cherry, and alder kitchen cabinets:

Shiloh Cabinetry
Dura Supreme Cabinetry
Ovation Custom Cabinetry

Form Vs. Function
Fitting your kitchen with high-quality wooden cabinets and cupboards adds beauty to the interior of your home, but they can also add function as well. Many cabinet manufacturers feature functional storage options such as knife blocks, tilt-out bins, pull-out pantry towers, rotating shelves, spice drawers, bin recycling centers, mixer cabinets, pull-out towel cabinets, (cooking) tray partitions, and many others. A kitchen is typically considered the heart of the home, so why not make it as functional as it is beautiful?

Installation Specifications
When buying a kitchen cabinet or any other furniture that requires installation, it is best that you opt to have it custom made to fit the specifications and measurements of your kitchen. Ready-made kitchen cabinets may look good with your overall theme but might not fit the space you have available. Also, ready-made kitchen cabinets may present structural problems and cause you to modify your kitchen or kitchen walls and ceiling heights just so the new cabinets fit – which results in an unnecessary expense.

High-grade craftsmanship communicates taste, even when it’s regarding a kitchen cabinet. A quality wooden cabinet or cupboard installed snugly to your kitchen not only adds to the beauty of the room, but also increases the value of your home. The higher quality of kitchen cabinets that you install in your home, the more value your home will possess.

    This is worth a read:

Methods For Advanced Fine Woodworkers

The joinery methods listed below, are some of the most challenging types in fine woodworking, and are not suited for the beginner. These advanced joinery methods include:

Mortise And Tenon Joints
Used extensively by experienced woodworkers, for joining furniture parts. Also used in timber framing. The mortise is a square hole, made by drilling holes in the wood – the hole is finished (made square or rectangular) by use of wood chisels. The tenon part of the joint is the square ‘peg’, also fashioned by use of wood chisels. An example of this joinery method; a coffee table with mortises set into the table top, would have one (or both) ends of the legs and cross braces fashioned into tenons, allowing the legs and braces to slide into the square hole sockets.

Dovetail Joinery
Also used by advanced woodworkers. Dovetail joints are used for making corners in expensive items, like decorative boxes and chests, and drawers in fine furniture, to name a few. Also, dovetails and ‘HALF DOVETAIL’ joints can be found in some log dwelling construction. Dovetail joints are some of the most beautiful types of joints known to the craft of fine woodworking they’re also one of the strongest.

Dowel Joinery
Calls for the use of wooden ‘pegs’, used as a ‘male and female’ type of joinery. The pegs or ‘dowels’ are usually a few inches long – a hole is drilled in the end of one of the boards to be joined, the dowel is inserted into the hole to fit snugly, and usually glued into place. A hole is then marked and drilled into the other piece of wood, glued, and the two pieces of wood are fit together. Furniture built with dowel joinery has good, initial strength and integrity, but doweled sections tend to come loosened over time.

‘Biscuit’ Joinery
Works sort of like dowel joinery, but uses ‘biscuits’ instead of dowels. These biscuits are actually small, oval pieces of wood, and the method requires the use of a special power tool, called a ‘biscuit joiner’. This is a relatively new joinery technique, and is becoming a favorite among fine woodworkers who do a lot of joinery. Biscuit joinery has the advantage of being a quick and relatively inexpensive form of joinery. It’s faster than constructing most of the ‘traditional’ joints, like those listed above. The only substantial expense is the initial investment of buying the biscuit joiner tool – the rest of the system only requires the purchase of the ‘biscuits’, usually sold in boxes of 500 pieces or so, and the yellow wood glue. The glue and the biscuits cost less than $20 – the biscuit joiner runs in the $200 to $250 range.

All About Joiners And Custom Joinery

Joiners work to create architectural woodwork, doors, windows, stairs etc. Shop and kitchen fitting also fall under the remit of a joiner providing the materials used are wood.
