When I left school being a builder interested me, so I did a 6 month course on bricklaying with a chance of a placement with a building firm at the end of it. Unfortunately there was no placement available, too many trainees, not enough places. One placement came up as a plasterers apprentice so I took it.
I started working for a group of plasterers all of them very good and reputable. We did everything from new builds to old barn conversions. I watched and learned, each one had different techniques and different knowledge that they were willing to pass on. I took it all in and started doing small jobs myself. I loved it and lived for it but after 3 years work dried up. fortunately I managed to get a job working in a factory warehouse so money kept coming in and overtime was plenty.
Around 120 people was working there at the time and the firm was growing. Word spread that I did plastering, a week never went by without me being asked to do a plastering job. If it wasn’t for my work colleagues it was for their family or friends. I did a job for an electrician, he replaced the fuse box in my house. I did a job for a carpenter, he hung some new doors for me. Kitchen fitters, Carpet fitters, all professional tradesmen working at a factory. What a waste of talent, why were we all working here? Job security with a thriving company.
I think the phrase is “wheels within wheels”. So if you are struggling to find a tradesman to do some plastering, plumbing or even carpet fitting, Ask a factory worker.
